Mission Statement

Europe's growing drug problem has been described as the Black Death of the 90's. There are an estimated 20 million drug abusers in Europe alone and the numbers are growing steadily. Drug related suicides are rising alarmingly among our teenagers and drug related accidents and absenteeism from work are also rising.

In response to these dangerous trends, a number of European concerned citizens came together in Berlin in 1988 and signed a formal declaration to work together to reduce the demand for drugs among our young people, to care for addicts and support their families. EURAD was thus established as a voluntary NGO. EURAD is an independent foundation without political or religious ties. Eurad has consultative status with the Council of Europe and is an NGO member of the UN Committee on Narcotics in Vienna.

Our members are committed to informing politicians and other policy makers as well as the general public on all aspects of illegal narcotics and associated problems, e.g. addiction, HIV and general health.

EURAD does not support so called harm reduction policies, recognising that these enable addiction and lead to harm production policies.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1990) states "We shall take all measures to protect children from the use of narcotic drugs "(Article 33).

EURAD believes that the way forward in combating the drugs epidemic is to reduce the demand for drugs while supporting families afflicted by drug abuse. Drugs are illegal because they are dangerous; they are not dangerous because they are illegal.

Legal Status

As an apolitical and non-religious world organisation, EURAD cannot be affiliated to any political or religious organisation, party , community, sect or cult (religious or otherwise).
(See article 2 Rules of Procedure.)

However, this political and religious neutrality does not prevent EURAD from cooperating with or lobbying any organisation, whatever its legal status, as long as this organisation acts in accordance with the principles of both the European Convention and the United Nations’ Convention on  Human Rights. This statement implies that EURAD’s activities are based on the respect of freedom, tolerance and the refusal of sectarianism of  any kind.

Any lobbying activity or cooperation must be fully authorised by the President of EURAD, with the consent of the board of directors.
