1. Drug Abuse - Reasons Why

  • curiosity
  • peer pressure
  • pleasure
  • low self-esteem
  • ignorance
  • escapism - sexual abuse
  • availability - susceptibility
  • to establish independence
  • an expression of rebellion
  • a family history of alcohol abuse
  • bereavement or loss
  • problems at school: bullying, stress, fear; entry into secondary school a difficult time; exam time
  • long term family illness

Explain that medicines / drugs are for sick people.
Give equal time to family members

WHAT INFLUENCES ARE EXERTED?

  • Home - a need for guidance.
  • School - must share responsibility.
  • Friends - a powerful influence; invite them home, get to know their parents.

NO YOUNG PERSON SHOULD TAKE A MOOD ALTERING SUBSTANCE UNLESS MEDICALLY PRESCRIBED.

Drugs are illiegal because they are dangerous - They are not dangerous because they are illegal.
