Pushing Drugs in the European Parliament
Anti-Prohibitionists conspire to legalize all drugs, including crack
Today a small group of Radical M.E.P.'s (Members of the European Parliament) and a few notorious drug advocates have gathered right in the European Parliament building to promote drug abuse, the non-medical use of addictive drugs. The anti-prohibitionists, the name says it all, have declared a War on Drug Laws. Today is the first day of a two day conference with the ultimate goal of legalizing all illicit drugs. "Including crack", said one of the organisers, the American Arnold Trebach, in his opening speech.
Trebach, a notorious drug advocate, argues that drugs bring personal disruption, family disruption, but no social disruption, and therefore should be made legal.
Professor Trebach, who has been wearing this academic title for a number of years, still makes a big miscalculation by disregarding the fact that society is made up of both persons and families, our families! The family is the cornerstone of society.
So you couldn't care less if my child is on crack?
Trebach must know that if you take away all persons and all families, You have no society, and that a "Brave New World" , 'socially cleansed' by a flood of drugs, could not be called a society! That is a jungle.
Another speaker, MEP Chris Davies from the UK, who was recently detained because of public disobedience, talked about the 'mantra' of the prohibitionists, that "drugs are bad". Still, this 'mantra' might have more supporters than Davies would like, because Trebach forcefully states: Drugs are bad, but prohibition is worse!
Chris Davies points out an interesting fact: Alcohol produces 5.000 deaths by overdose a year in the UK and illicit drugs only 1.000. In other words: illicit drugs don't produce half the destruction that legal drugs do. But of course then, they should be made legal too! It would be easy for drugs to 'catch up' with alcohol. Do we really want that?
And how much value do we place on a human life?
The main target of this conference is to undermine the UN Conventions on drugs and the unanimous decisions of the 1998 UNGASS to decrease supply of and demand for drugs. In a variety of ways drug promoters try to demoralise the public with statements that the fight against drugs is being lost and on the other hand are increasing public tolerance of drugs by making it look socially acceptable.
Drug legalizers claim drugs are a human right and an expression of personal liberty.
We, as ex-drug addicts know what it means to be enslaved by this "personal liberty"
Is drug abuse a human right?
On the contrary: It is in fact a human
right to be PROTECTED from drug abuse.
This protection extends particularly
to the most vulnerable of our society,
our young people. This is clearly stated in article 33 of the Convention
on the Rights of the Child which requires States to undertake measures
to protect children from drug abuse.
Article 3 of the UN Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances of 1988 refers to "publicly inciting or inducing others, by any means, ... to use narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances illicitly" and requires each party to establish such conduct as a criminal offence under its domestic law.
Yes, drug promoters have a right to free assembly, but we don't have to tolerate drug promotion in our government buildings!
The European Parliament should not be abused to undermine the foundations of the world's drug control policy. All M.E.P.'s should be aware of the grave responsibility of protecting European Citizens against public promotion of drugs by officials and take appropriate action!
