Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and Doping Agents
- An Illustrated Guide

Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and Doping Agents - An Illustrated Guide gives a comprehensive review of the most commonly abused drugs, ranging from cannabis and heroin to Rohypnol and anabolic steroids. For every major group of drugs, their composition, essential effects, health hazards and diagnostic symptoms are described in detail. Special chapters deal with the hazards of drug abuse and methods for detection.

The guide is written as an in-depth introduction for professional people facing drug problems in their daily work or environment. In Sweden it has established itself as a standard for education and training of police officers, social workers, teachers and other groups who need ready access to basic information on drug-related problems.

Opium is the dried latex from the poppy capsule. It is black or dark brown, and it is generally produced in bars or lumps. It can also be dripped as a solution onto tobacco for smoking. (SKL)

The guide contains more than 80 full colour pictures of drugs, paraphernalia and drug-related symptoms. Many of them are unique, based on police photographs or forensic evidence.

The guide is based on a brochure produced in 1999 by the Swedish National Police Board, the Swedish Carnegie Institute and the Swedish Narcotic Officers' Association. The English language edition has been adapted to suit an international readership. An Estonian edition was published last year, and a Russian edition is under production.

The author of the guide is Jonas Hartelius, M.Sc., former Secretary General of the Swedish Carnegie Institute and author of more than ten books on drug problems.

Doping agents include e.g. androgenic anabolic steroids, testosterone and human growth hormone. They are used in medical care to treat a number of hormonal disorders. They can also be abused to create an abnormal increase in muscular body mass. (RPS)
