How Iceland managed to have the lowest level of substance abuse in Europe

How did Reykjavik City support adolescents in changing their behavior towards alcohol, smoking and drugs? Go and find out at the "Cities For Youth" conference from 19th-20th March 2014 at the Hilton Reykjavik Nordica Hotel in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Dear Colleagues,

Substance use amongst Icelandic adolescents has become the lowest in Europe in 2013 from measuring very high only a few years ago. In 1998 42% of 15 to 16 year old Icelanders had become drunk during the past 30 days whereas now, in 2013, only 5% of students report the same. Daily smoking and the use of cannabis has also decreased dramatically (click here to see graph).

The City of Reykjavík celebrates this success during a two day conference 19 - 20 March 2014 at the Hilton Reykjavík Nordica Hotel in Reykjavík, Iceland. We would be delighted if you could join us there.

During the conference the City of Reykjavík, policymakers, researchers and practitioners will demonstrate how substance use prevention has been addressed in Reykjavík for the past 15 years. The conference will include keynote lectures and practical "hands on" information directly from those who have contributed to and lead the prevention work in Reykjavík. We invite you to a journey on how this positive change was brought about over a period of only 15 years.

Since 2006 the methodology from the Icelandic model has been introduced in several cities in Europe through "Youth in Europe - A Drug Prevention Programme".

The conference starts Wednesday morning, 19 March and ends Thursday afternoon, 20 March. On Wednesday evening you will be invited for a get-together at the City Hall and on Thursday evening there will be an optional gala dinner for conference particpants. Lunches and coffee breaks are provided both days.

Accommodation in various price ranges has been reserved in hotels near the conference venue and at the Hilton Nordica Hotel for participants and their accompanying persons.

Use the opportunity to visit Iceland´s most spetacular attractions, including the blue lagoon, geysers, waterfalls and glaciers.

On-line registration is now open where you can also book accommodation and excursions.

Language of the conference is English.
